Supported the successful close of a critical guarantee facility for a renewable energy trader

A renewable energy trader in South Africa · 3 min read

A renewable energy trader needed a guarantee facility to back its growing role as an offtaker. We ran the project office that took every party to financial close in nine months.

The client

Our client is a renewable energy trader in South Africa. It buys power from generation projects and sells it on to the businesses that use it.

That makes it an offtaker: the buyer that commits to take a project's power over the long term. Before lenders fund a new wind or solar plant, they look hard at whether its offtaker can keep paying for years to come. So the strength of our client's credit has a direct bearing on which new projects can raise finance.

Context

As the firm grew its trading, its credit position became critical. New generation projects relied on it to secure financing, and a guarantee facility would strengthen it.

A facility like this is never a single negotiation. It moves through parallel workstreams, each with its own deliverables and deadlines, across many internal and external parties. Each party holds part of the picture, and nobody holds all of it.

In deals like this, the risk is rarely one big problem. It is the small ones: an action nobody owns, an update that reaches one party but not the next, a dependency spotted a week too late. Each one can push back the date everyone is working towards.

To reach financial close, the transaction needed:

  • Clear sight of every workstream, deliverable and deadline
  • A named owner for every open action
  • Structured communication between internal and external parties
  • Blockers and dependencies spotted and escalated fast

Approach

We ran the transaction's project management office (PMO) and supported execution, with one job: keep a complex, multi-party deal moving towards financial close.

We started with a single transaction tracker. Every action, owner, deadline and status sat in one place, and it became the reference point for every conversation about the deal.

Around the tracker we set a working rhythm: recurring meetings across the parties, and follow-ups in between, so actions kept moving after each meeting ended. We turned everyone's inputs into clear updates for management, so leaders could see where the deal stood without chasing anyone for it.

We tracked dependencies, deliverables and blockers as closely as the actions themselves. When something threatened the timetable, we escalated it early to the people who could clear it, then followed it through until it was done.

Impact

Nine months in, the guarantee facility reached financial close, strengthening our client's position as a long-term offtaker.

Financial close reached

With the facility in place, new renewable generation projects can secure the funding they need.

One source of truth

Every party worked from a single tracker of actions, owners and deadlines, so every meeting started from the same facts.

Blockers surfaced early

Dependencies and escalations were resolved before they could delay the timetable, and the deal kept moving through to close.

For a trader whose growth depends on its credit, closing the facility was more than one deal done. It means more new projects can raise finance with our client as their buyer.

If this reflects a situation in your organisation, we would welcome a conversation.
